U. S. Colored Troops Memorial Fund

The Queen Anne’s County Veterans Committee, a subgroup of the Centreville Veterans Information Center, seeks to raise $300,000 to erect a United States Colored Troops (USCT) Memorial honoring the more than 435 free and enslaved African Americans from Queen Anne’s County who fought in the Civil War. The Memorial, a bronze sculpture of a USCT soldier created by local artist Tilghman Hemsley, will be installed at Kennard African American Heritage and Cultural Center in Centreville, Maryland. The Memorial will serve to acknowledge and educate the public about the pivotal role of the USCT in winning the Civil War and to recognize their valor, sacrifice, and contribution.
