Sisters at Heart Fund

The Sisters at Heart Fund supports women and men who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

This local, grass-roots group of survivors and supporters was established in 2007 with the mission of promoting breast cancer awareness in the community, as well as supporting men and women diagnosed with breast cancer.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women.  One in eight women will develop breast cancer over the course of a lifetime, and a man’s lifetime risk is one in eight hundred.

In 2010, Sisters at Heart became an established fund of the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland a 501(c)(3) public charity.  Our efforts throughout the community have been recognized by the Charles County Commissioners, Charles County Government Department of Community Services Senior Centers, Charles County High Schools, College of Southern Maryland, University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, Calvert Health Sheldon E. Goldberg Center for Breast Health, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Breast Surgery, La Plata Blue Knights Football and Cheer Organization, and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Baseball organization. Sisters at Heart has collaborated with many local businesses and agencies to promote breast cancer awareness and education.

Through the years, the group mission has grown to supporting local organizations that provide education and support to breast cancer patients and their families through the funds raised throughout the year. Some of the fundraising efforts include restaurant nights, raffles, sale of breast cancer awareness merchandise, and our Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Fitness Walk in Indian Head, Maryland.

Our goal is to raise funds to provide support services for breast health, including diagnostic mammograms and screenings to the uninsured and underinsured in the local communities in Charles County and promote Breast Cancer Awareness.

In Memory of our founder, Roberta Kieliger, we make “Comfort Pillows” for the women and men who have cancer related breast surgery and give them to cancer patients at Charles Regional Medical Center, La Plata, MD. Future hospitals will be St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD and Calvert Memorial Hospital, Prince Frederick, MD.

The Sisters at Heart Breast Cancer Support Group of Southern Maryland invites you to help make a difference in the lives of men and women in Charles County.

Join us for our 19th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on October 19th!
