In 1998, a group of prevention professionals in Maryland came together to form a professional association to promote prevention as an important field throughout the state. This active group created position papers, defined prevention for other professionals, assisted in statewide planning efforts in a way employees are often unable to and provided assistance to others in the prevention field. Since then MAPPA has served as a forum for discussion of issues, a means of networking within the field and a voice to articulate prevention concerns.
